Obverse description The face bears the Cyrillic inscription ТРАНСПОРТНЫЙ СЕРТИФИКАТ across the top, with the denomination ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ ЗОЛОТОМ set within an oval guilloche vignette in the centre. The Soviet state emblem appears at upper left, flanked by the series and serial number at upper left and upper right; a crossed axe and anchor device occupies the upper right corner. A detailed steam locomotive vignette runs along the bottom of the note, accompanied by printed text setting out the terms of the interest-free loan obligation and two manuscript facsimile signatures of the People's Commissar of Railways and the People's Commissar of Finance. The year 1923 г. is printed below the central denomination panel.

Reverse description The reverse carries two columns of printed Cyrillic text on plain paper stock with no pictorial vignette. The left column sets out the conditions of acceptance of transport certificates at state transport cashiers up to 1 May 1924 and at railway, river and maritime transport cashiers up to 1 April 1924, redeemable at the gold rouble rate of the Quotation Commission. The right column reproduces an extract from the resolution of the Council of Labour and Defence of the USSR authorising the issue of these interest-free loan obligations in denominations of 5 roubles gold, for a total of 5,000,000 gold roubles, in series of up to one million roubles each.
