The Treaty of Stans (1481) resolved a genuine crisis — the Swiss Confederation was on the verge of collapse over disputes between urban and rural cantons, and it was the hermit Nicholas of Flüe, mediating from his cell at Ranft without attending in person, whose intervention produced the compromise that held the federation together. The commemorative issue marking the treaty's 500th anniversary was one of several Swiss proof and circulation strikes released through the early 1980s honoring foundational moments in confederate history.
