This is a licensed commemorative struck for the Democratic Republic of Congo — a country that had no political or dynastic connection to the Dutch royal house — issued purely as a collector piece for the international numismatic market. The pairing of a Congolese denomination with a Dutch noble wedding was entirely commercial, arranged through licensing agreements that proliferated across central African mints and issuing authorities throughout the 1990s. Prince Maurits, a nephew of Queen Beatrix, married Marilène van den Broek in 2001, meaning this piece was struck two years before the marriage it nominally commemorates.
