Beschrijving voorzijde Central field features a finely detailed lion's head facing left with an open mouth and flowing mane, set within a recessed circular medallion. Surrounding the central device, an inner ring bears the legend REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO. The outer border carries the inscriptions BANQUE CENTRALE along the upper arc and 5 FRANCS along the lower arc, flanked by star ornaments at intervals. The date 19 99 is divided and appears at the left and right sides of the border respectively. The design is executed in a two-tier relief with a polished proof-like finish.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central field presents a full-color photographic portrait of Prince Maurits and Princess Marilène of the Dutch Royal House, shown together in an informal pose with a partial rendering of the Dutch royal coat of arms visible to the right. The legend MAURITS ET MARILENE is inscribed in the upper portion of the central disc, while MAISON ROYALE DES PAYS-BAS appears along the lower arc of the inner ring. The outer border carries the inscription MAISONS ROYALES D'EUROPE DES SIECLES DERNIERS arranged circumferentially. The color insert technique lends a vivid, photorealistic quality to the portraits against a decorative background.

Aanvullende informatie

This is a licensed commemorative struck for the Democratic Republic of Congo — a country that had no political or dynastic connection to the Dutch royal house — issued purely as a collector piece for the international numismatic market. The pairing of a Congolese denomination with a Dutch noble wedding was entirely commercial, arranged through licensing agreements that proliferated across central African mints and issuing authorities throughout the 1990s. Prince Maurits, a nephew of Queen Beatrix, married Marilène van den Broek in 2001, meaning this piece was struck two years before the marriage it nominally commemorates.
