Monaco's essai pieces from this period were struck as trial or pattern submissions rather than for general release, meaning surviving examples were distributed almost exclusively to collectors, government officials, and monetary authorities. The Principality's coinage during Rainier III's reign was struck under French technical supervision, and essais like this one were produced in deliberately restricted quantities — typically no more than a few hundred pieces — to evaluate die quality and alloy behavior before committing to a circulation run.
