Caunois submitted this pattern during the turbulent succession crisis following Charles X's abdication in August 1830, when the question of who would govern France — and whose face would anchor its coinage — remained genuinely unresolved. The July Revolution had just installed Louis-Philippe, and competing engravers rushed proposals to the mint before any design was officially sanctioned. Tin was the standard material for pattern submissions of the period, keeping production costs low while the political situation remained fluid.
Caunois lost the commission. The Domard design ultimately prevailed for the new Orleanist coinage.
