Obverse description Left-facing uniformed bust of Mwambutsa IV, Mwami of Burundi, depicted in military dress uniform with peaked cap bearing an emblem, and shoulder epaulettes with decorative insignia. The effigy occupies the majority of the field in high relief. The legend MWAMBUTSA IV curves along the upper left periphery and MWAMI DU BURUNDI along the upper right, both in raised Latin characters.

Reverse description Central depiction of the royal arms of Burundi, comprising a shield bearing a lion's head in the centre, surmounted by a traditional drum and flanked by crossed spears, with a scroll below bearing the motto GAN SABWA. The denomination 5 FRANCS appears in the lower field, flanked by raised dots, with the date 1962 to the right. The legend ROYAUME DU BURUNDI INDEPENDANCE 1 JUILLET curves around the upper periphery. A small Paris Mint privy mark and the silver fineness mark 800/1000 appear in the lower central field.
