Burundi's independence from Belgian trusteeship came in July 1962, splitting the former Ruanda-Urundi territory into two separate states. This coin was among the first issues struck for the new kingdom under Mwambutsa IV, who had actually held the mwami title since 1915 — making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in African history at the moment of independence. The Belgian franc had circulated as the de facto currency throughout the colonial period, so this issue carried real symbolic weight as a break from that monetary dependence.
