Louis XVIII's return from exile in 1814 required an immediate recoinage to erase Napoleonic imagery from French pockets — a politically urgent act as much as a monetary one. The bare head portrait used here was a deliberate classicizing choice, evoking Roman imperial authority at a moment when the restored Bourbon monarchy was desperate to project legitimacy.
Dies were produced across multiple mints simultaneously, including Paris, Bayonne, Bordeaux, and Lille among others, making this a series where mint mark is everything. The Nantes mint (T) produced some of the lowest figures across the run.
