This is a trial strike (essai) produced in 1971 at a moment when Luxembourg was reconsidering its coinage arrangements with Belgium under the long-standing monetary union between the two countries. Essais were struck in gold specifically for archival and presentation purposes — they were never submitted for circulation approval and exist in extremely small numbers.
The KM#E84 designation confirms its status as a pattern, separate from any issued coinage of the type.
