| Reverse description | Central denomination numeral 5F in large, bold characters dominates the field, surmounted by a grand ducal crown with jewelled arches and a globus cruciger finial. The date 1971 appears in the lower field beneath the denomination. The entire central device is flanked by two symmetrical oak branches curving upward from the base, their leaves rendered in fine relief, framing the design in a classical heraldic composition. |

| Additional information |
This is a trial strike (essai) produced in 1971 at a moment when Luxembourg was reconsidering its coinage arrangements with Belgium under the long-standing monetary union between the two countries. Essais were struck in gold specifically for archival and presentation purposes — they were never submitted for circulation approval and exist in extremely small numbers.
The KM#E84 designation confirms its status as a pattern, separate from any issued coinage of the type.
