The Hercule 5 francs was revived under the Third Republic as a deliberate break from Napoleonic and monarchist coin imagery, returning to a design first introduced by Dupré during the Revolution. The 1875 issue falls within a relatively stable production run, but the type as a whole is notorious for inconsistent edge lettering alignment — a mechanical issue endemic to the period's adjustable collar presses at Paris.
