| Obverse description | At center, the denomination '5 FRANCS' and date '1875' are displayed within a wreath composed of a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right, the two tied at the base with a ribbon. The circular legend 'RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' runs along the upper periphery. In the exergue, the Paris mint mark 'A' appears alongside the engraver's and assayer's privy marks. |

| Additional information |
The Hercule 5 francs was revived under the Third Republic as a deliberate break from Napoleonic and monarchist coin imagery, returning to a design first introduced by Dupré during the Revolution. The 1875 issue falls within a relatively stable production run, but the type as a whole is notorious for inconsistent edge lettering alignment — a mechanical issue endemic to the period's adjustable collar presses at Paris.
