The BCEAO was established in 1962 to manage the CFA franc zone shared across eight West African nations — all former French colonies bound together by a fixed exchange rate to the French franc, and later the euro, with French Treasury guarantees underwriting the entire arrangement. The 5-franc denomination has circulated virtually unchanged across six decades and multiple political upheavals, including coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, and Niger, without the currency itself being repudiated by any member state.
The aluminium-nickel-bronze alloy replaced an earlier aluminium composition (KM#2) sometime around 1965, giving the coin considerably better durability in tropical conditions.
