The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — the only Marxist Arab state — issued this series following the 1967 British withdrawal from Aden and the subsequent NLF seizure of power. The new government moved quickly to establish its own coinage, breaking from the transitional South Arabian currency that had briefly circulated after independence.
Aluminium was a deliberate choice for a government with virtually no foreign currency reserves and a shattered economy inherited from the colonial transition.
