| Obverse description | Central field bears the large Arabic numeral '5' (٥), with the denomination legend 'فلوس' (Fils) inscribed below. The Hijri year appears to the right and the Gregorian year to the left in the lower field. The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — the only Marxist Arab state — issued this series following the 1967 British withdrawal from Aden and the subsequent NLF seizure of power. The new government moved quickly to establish its own coinage, breaking from the transitional South Arabian currency that had briefly circulated after independence.
Aluminium was a deliberate choice for a government with virtually no foreign currency reserves and a shattered economy inherited from the colonial transition.
