Iraq switched this denomination to stainless steel in 1971 as part of a broader rationalisation of the coinage following the Ba'ath Party's consolidation of power after the 1968 coup. The shift away from bronze reflected both practical economics and a government keen to modernise state institutions — the currency included. Production continued through a decade marked by the nationalisation of the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1972 and the oil wealth that followed, yet these small-denomination coins remained very much a workhorse of everyday commerce.
