Yiannis Moralis (1916–2009) was one of the most significant Greek painters of the twentieth century, associated with the so-called Generation of the '30s that reshaped modern Greek art through engagement with both European modernism and Hellenic tradition. This coin was issued in the centenary year of his birth. Greece's commemorative euro program has frequently honored visual artists and intellectuals in ways most eurozone members do not, a function of the country's opt-out from full euro coinage standardization that permits national collector issues in non-standard denominations.
