The Wadden Sea stretches across the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 — one of the largest tidal flat systems on Earth. This coin was issued as part of the Dutch "Nature" series, which the Royal Dutch Mint used to highlight ecologically significant Dutch environments during Willem-Alexander's reign. The colored finish was applied post-strike, a process the KNM refined considerably in the 2010s to prevent flaking along the reeded edge.
Face value of five euros renders it technically legal tender but practically uncirculated by design.
