| Obverse lettering | WILLEM-ALEXANDER KONING DER NEDERLANDEN JE MAINTIENDRAI (Translation: WILLEM-ALEXANDER KING OF THE NETHERLANDS `JE MAINTIENDRAI` = I WILL HOLD) |
| Reverse description | The reverse is dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea and features a dynamic composition dominated by two engraved birds in flight — a large spoonbill or similar wading bird rendered in fine line engraving occupying the upper left, and a smaller seabird to the upper right. A stylized map of the Wadden Sea island chain arcs along the lower left field, with the names of all constituent Dutch, German, and Danish islands inscribed as legends surrounding it. The denomination 5 EURO appears prominently in the lower left field. The title DE WADDENZEE is rendered in bold colored lettering at the top — red for 'DE WADDENZEE' and blue for the final portion — with NEDERLANDS WERELDERFGOED 2016 inscribed in a secondary arc below in white lettering, along with a engraved starfish near the lower center of the field. |
