Germany's colored collector euro series — which pairs a conventional metal ring with a tinted polymer center — has been running since 2016, with each annual release targeting a specific protected species under EU biodiversity directives. The Red Mason Bee (*Osmia bicornis*) edition continues that mandate. These are legal tender but struck purely for the collector market; none circulate.
The polymer insert technology was developed in collaboration with Giesecke+Devrient and remains a German mint exclusive among eurozone members.
