Italy's state mint issued this piece as part of a licensing arrangement with Ferrero to mark Nutella's 60th anniversary — the spread having first gone on sale in 1964 under that name, following an earlier incarnation as "Supercrema" that Italian trade regulations forced Ferrero to rebrand. Collector pieces tied to commercial food brands are unusual for a sovereign mint of this standing, and the series drew considerable skepticism in numismatic circles upon release.
The "white" designation distinguishes it from color-variant siblings in the same issue, with the surface treatment applied via enamel overlay on the silver flan.
