The International Year of Planet Earth was a joint initiative by UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences, running 2007–2009, aimed at applying geoscientific knowledge to societal challenges including natural disaster mitigation and groundwater management. San Marino participated through its commemorative coinage program, which has long served as the republic's primary vehicle for engaging with international organizations — the country's geographic and economic relationship with Italy means its circulating coinage is effectively absorbed into the Italian market, leaving commemoratives as the more culturally visible output.
KM#512 was struck at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome, which has produced San Marino's coinage under longstanding agreement.
