| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a stylised tree with prominent surfacing roots growing above karst rock formations, with the silhouette of Mount Titano rising in the background. A circular arc representing the planet Earth appears to the left of the composition, while four stylised waves occupy the lower field. A hurricane vortex rendered in the upper field alludes to climate change and atmospheric phenomena. The legend PIANETA · TERRA and the denomination 5 EURO are inscribed around the design, accompanied by the engraver's signature V. DE SETA R and the date 2008. |

The International Year of Planet Earth was a joint initiative by UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences, running 2007–2009, aimed at applying geoscientific knowledge to societal challenges including natural disaster mitigation and groundwater management. San Marino participated through its commemorative coinage program, which has long served as the republic's primary vehicle for engaging with international organizations — the country's geographic and economic relationship with Italy means its circulating coinage is effectively absorbed into the Italian market, leaving commemoratives as the more culturally visible output.
KM#512 was struck at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome, which has produced San Marino's coinage under longstanding agreement.
