Finland hosted the 2022 IIHF World Championship in Tampere and Helsinki after the event had been stripped from Belarus following the violent crackdown on post-election protests in 2020. The tournament carried unusual weight for the host nation: Finland won gold on home ice, defeating Canada in the final — their third world title overall and the first played in front of Finnish crowds.
