Finland hosted the 2022 IIHF World Championship in Tampere and Helsinki after the event had been stripped from Belarus following the violent crackdown on post-election protests in 2020. The tournament carried unusual weight for the host nation: Finland won gold on home ice, defeating Canada in the final — their third world title overall and the first played in front of Finnish crowds.
The coin was issued by the Mint of Finland under the authority of the Bank of Finland. Bimetallic circulating commemoratives of this type were produced for general circulation alongside a collector finish, with the two versions sharing the same design.
