The denomination '5 EURO' is inscribed in the upper field above the eagle. The circular legend 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' runs along the upper rim, while twelve small stars arc along the lower rim, flanked by the mint mark 'J' at lower left and the date '2023' at lower right. |

Part of Germany's long-running polymer-insert "Farbige Fünf-Euro-Münze" series, which began in 2016 with the blue planet Earth issue and has since covered a rotating cast of protected habitats and species. The colored polycarbonate ring — here rendered in iridescent blue-green — is produced separately and pressed into the coin during striking, a two-stage process developed in collaboration with the Bavarian firm Giesecke+Devrient. Hamburgische Münze struck this particular release, identifiable by the J mintmark.
The banded demoiselle (*Calopteryx splendens*) is a species of damselfly found across much of Europe, its populations closely tied to clean, slow-moving water — a deliberate choice for a series explicitly linked to environmental protection under German federal conservation law.
