| 裏面の説明 | The reverse features a bold two-colour printed design divided diagonally, representing the Latvian national flag's carmine red and white colours in the form of a sharp geometric composition. On either side of the central diagonal stripe, stylized barbed wire and entangled iron cross motifs are depicted in relief against the coloured fields, symbolizing the hardships and battles of the Latvian War of Independence. The denomination 5 EURO appears in the upper left of the field in Latin script, and the year 2019 is inscribed in the lower right. The interplay of the coloured print with the silver relief creates a powerful visual contrast. The composition as a whole serves as a symbolic reference to the defence of the Latvian nation and its flag during the freedom fights of 1918–1920. |

Latvia's War of Independence (1918–1920) was fought on multiple fronts simultaneously — against Bolshevik forces pushing west, Baltic German Landeswehr units with their own territorial ambitions, and remnants of the German Imperial army. That Latvia emerged as a functioning republic from this three-way conflict was far from inevitable. The war ended with the Soviet-Latvian Peace Treaty of August 1920, in which the USSR formally renounced all claims to Latvian territory "voluntarily and forever" — a clause the Soviets would ignore entirely twenty years later.
The two-colour print application on the reverse is achieved through a pad-printing process applied post-striking, a technique increasingly used by the Latvian mint for commemorative issues in this series.
