The Battle of Karpenisi in August 1823 marked one of the more tactically significant engagements of the Greek War of Independence, best known as the action in which Markos Botsaris, commander of the Souliote fighters, was killed in a night raid on the Ottoman-Albanian camp. Botsaris died at the moment of his force's success — the raid achieved its objective, but he did not survive to see it.
This issue belongs to Greece's ongoing commemorative program marking the bicentennial of the war, which generated dozens of collector-oriented releases across multiple denominations between 2021 and 2023.
