Reverse description The reverse presents a dynamic battle scene depicting Greek independence fighters (klephts/armatoloi) in traditional fustanella costume engaged in close combat, commemorating the Battle of Karpenisi of 1823. Multiple figures are shown armed with rifles, swords, and a battle standard, rendered in detailed relief with strong compositional depth. The arc legend 200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΜΑΧΗ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΡΠΕΝΗΣΙΟΥ curves along the upper periphery, while the date 2023 appears in the left field accompanied by a decorative floral ornament. The denomination 5 ΕΥΡΩ is inscribed along the lower portion of the field.

Additional information

The Battle of Karpenisi in August 1823 marked one of the more tactically significant engagements of the Greek War of Independence, best known as the action in which Markos Botsaris, commander of the Souliote fighters, was killed in a night raid on the Ottoman-Albanian camp. Botsaris died at the moment of his force's success — the raid achieved its objective, but he did not survive to see it.

This issue belongs to Greece's ongoing commemorative program marking the bicentennial of the war, which generated dozens of collector-oriented releases across multiple denominations between 2021 and 2023.
