Leopold I's final years coincided with the outbreak of the Rákóczi uprising — Francis II Rákóczi launched his war of independence against Habsburg rule in 1703, and multi-ducat gold pieces from exactly this transitional moment were minted partly to fund imperial military responses to that insurgency.
