| Beschrijving voorzijde | Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Leopold I facing right, wearing a heavy curly wig, the effigy breaking through the inner pearl circle. The encircling Latin legend is interrupted at the base by a crowned twofold Hungarian coat of arms and the Madonna with Child (Patrona Hungariae), both set into the inscription band. The portrait displays the characteristic late-Baroque style associated with Habsburg imperial coinage of the period. |

Leopold I's final years coincided with the outbreak of the Rákóczi uprising — Francis II Rákóczi launched his war of independence against Habsburg rule in 1703, and multi-ducat gold pieces from exactly this transitional moment were minted partly to fund imperial military responses to that insurgency. Large gold multiples of this kind rarely entered ordinary commerce; they functioned as diplomatic gifts, officer payments, and presentation pieces, which explains why survivors tend to appear in grades inconsistent with anything resembling pocket wear.
The dual Herinek references suggest this type spans a die variety distinction between the 1702 and 1703 issues — a detail worth confirming against the struck surfaces before cataloging further.
