The composition alludes to the close of the Duke's life. The engraver's initial K. appears in a small cartouche at the base, below a horizontal ground line, all within a beaded border. The Latin motto VIRTVTIBVS OCCVPAT ORBEM arcs along the upper legend, translating as 'By virtues he conquers the world.' |
