Obverse description Crowned bust of Buddha in left profile, rendered in a stylized neoclassical manner, occupying the central field. The effigy is depicted wearing an elaborate tiered crown. The inscription TOKYO appears to the left of the bust and 1964 to the right, both in upright Latin lettering. The Olympic rings device appears in the lower field beneath the portrait.

Reverse description A six-armed decorative cross dominates the central field, with the Roman numeral V and the word DUCAT inscribed at its center. Stylized fleurs-de-lis or lily ornaments fill each of the six angles between the cross arms. The circular legend PRO PROSPERITATE MUNDI runs along the upper portion of the periphery, with V DUCAT 980 AUREUS MAGNUS completing the inscription around the lower portion.
