Pick 70 belongs to a transitional moment in Greek monetary history. Following the catastrophic population exchange with Turkey in 1922–23, Greece absorbed over a million refugees, placing enormous strain on public finances and forcing the National Bank to manage liquidity under conditions close to collapse. Small-denomination notes like this one circulated hard and wore out quickly — surviving examples in decent condition are genuinely uncommon.
Bradbury Wilkinson printed extensively for the National Bank across this period, producing several denominations from the same London facility. The 1923 series was among the last issued before Greece's currency came under the supervision of the newly established Bank of Greece in 1928.
