Giovanni Galeazzo Maria Sforza was seven years old when this coin was struck in his name. Effective power rested entirely with his mother, Bona of Savoy, and her advisor Cicco Simonetta — until Ludovico il Moro engineered Simonetta's arrest and execution in 1480 and effectively seized control of the duchy. The 5 doppi ducati denomination was a prestige instrument, not a commercial coin, issued to project ducal authority during a regency that was already politically precarious.
MIR MI#215/3 is among the rarest multiples of the series. Fewer than a handful of auction appearances are documented.
