| Obverse description | The obverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Palau rendered in high relief at center, depicting a figure of Neptune seated upon the sea holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid to his right, a treasure chest to his left, and a star above within a ornate shield cartouche. Above the shield, a traditional Palauan outrigger canoe with a paddler is depicted in the upper field. Palau has no native rabbit population and no cultural connection to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, yet has issued Chinese zodiac coins continuously for decades under licensing arrangements that funnel bullion sales through its nominal sovereignty. The program exists entirely as a collector product; none of these coins have ever circulated on the island.
