Reverse description A detailed high-relief depiction of a goat standing proudly atop a rocky outcrop, facing left with its head turned toward the viewer, its long curved horns prominent. A small bird perches on a rock in the lower left field, accompanied by a square cartouche bearing the Chinese character 羊 (goat). The years of the Chinese zodiac Goat cycle are inscribed in a circular legend around the periphery, and the denomination $5 appears in the lower exergue. A beaded border frames the design.

Additional information

Liberia's 1990s commemorative program was, bluntly, one of the most prolific and commercially driven in the world — the country issued hundreds of collector pieces during a period when the nation itself was tearing apart in civil war. The First Liberian Civil War ran from 1989 to 1996, and Charles Taylor's election in 1997 brought a fragile, short-lived peace. Coins like this one were produced almost entirely for the international collector market, with little to no domestic circulation.
