Sierra Leone has issued a long succession of wildlife-themed bullion pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation — this raptor entry is one of dozens in that commercial program. The coin never circulated in Sierra Leone and was never intended to.
Velociraptor mongoliensis was formally described in 1924 from specimens recovered in the Gobi Desert by the American Museum of Natural History's Central Asiatic Expeditions under Roy Chapman Andrews.
