Reverse description A highly detailed high-relief rendering of a Velociraptor in a dynamic standing pose dominates the central field, its jaws open and forelimbs raised with prominent claws. To the left, the denomination $5 is rendered in bold stylised numerals accompanied by three raptor claw prints below. The incuse inscription VELOCIRAPTOR curves along the lower periphery in large Latin capitals, while the notation 1 Oz 999 Silver appears in small lettering to the lower right of the dinosaur figure.

Sierra Leone has issued a long succession of wildlife-themed bullion pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation — this raptor entry is one of dozens in that commercial program. The coin never circulated in Sierra Leone and was never intended to.

Velociraptor mongoliensis was formally described in 1924 from specimens recovered in the Gobi Desert by the American Museum of Natural History's Central Asiatic Expeditions under Roy Chapman Andrews.
