Comments

Ultramar Ltd. operated a network of gas stations and convenience stores across Canada, and these gift certificates functioned as a proprietary scrip — accepted only at participating locations rather than circulating as negotiable instruments. The 1999 date places this squarely in the company's post-merger period: Ultramar had been absorbed into Ultramar Diamond Shamrock by 1996, though Canadian operations continued under the Ultramar name well into the 2000s.

Collector interest is narrow but consistent — petroleum company scrip from this period survives in quantity, since unredeemed certificates were simply discarded rather than formally recalled.
