The legend SINGAPORE AIRLINES curves along the upper rim within a recessed banner, while ANNIVERSARY is inscribed below the aircraft. The denomination $5 appears prominently in the lower central field, and the anniversary dates 1947-1997 are inscribed along the lower rim. The inner design area is separated from the reeded edge by a decorative milled border band. |

Issued to mark Singapore Airlines' 50th anniversary, this coin commemorates the carrier's origins as Malayan Airways, founded in 1947 as a joint venture between British Overseas Airways Corporation, Qantas, and the Ocean Steamship Company. The airline only became Singapore Airlines in 1972 following the dissolution of the Malaysia-Singapore Airlines partnership — a split driven by the two governments' diverging views on route priorities and national branding.
