Hawaii's Silver Certificates of Deposit were issued under the Currency Act of 1884 and backed by silver coin held on deposit with the Hawaiian Treasury. By 1895, the Republic had just been established following the 1894 constitution — the monarchy having been overthrown in January 1893 — and these notes carried forward the same basic framework used under the Kingdom, with the issuing authority updated to reflect the new government.
The American Bank Note Company had been Hawaii's printer of choice since the Kingdom period. Silver certificates of this series are genuinely scarce in any grade; the small island economy meant low print runs, and most examples that survived did so outside active circulation.
