Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Liberia at centre, featuring a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, a rising sun, a dove in flight, a plough, and a spade, all within a shield; a ribbon scroll above the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 2004 divided on either side of the shield. Along the lower field the denomination 5 DOLLARS is inscribed, flanked by the inscriptions FINE NIOBIUM to the left and .999/1,000 to the right. The entire design is framed by a fine beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse depicts two male sprinters in full stride, juxtaposing ancient and modern athletic traditions: a nude classical runner rendered in a Greco-Roman sculptural style occupies the middle ground to the left, while a contemporary athlete in competition attire strides dynamically in the foreground to the right. Ancient Greek architectural columns are visible in the lower left field, evoking the origins of the Olympic Games. A Greek-key meander border frames the lower and lateral periphery. The curved legend FROM ANCIENT TO MODERN SPORTS arcs along the upper rim, the denomination $5 appears to the right of the central figures, and the date 2004 is inscribed in the lower exergue.
