Palau has issued commemorative silver dollars in themed series since the 1990s, often licensing natural and geographic subjects with no direct connection to the island nation. The Mount Cook issue fits squarely into this commercial minting pattern, produced for the collector market rather than any domestic monetary purpose — Palau's actual currency is the US dollar.
