The Montreal Olympics coinage was authorized under the Olympic Lottery and Coin Act of 1973, with the Royal Canadian Mint producing 28 silver denominations across four series between 1973 and 1976 — one of the largest commemorative programs any national mint had attempted to that point. The $5 face value was essentially nominal; the coins were sold at a premium from the start and saw virtually no circulation.

The .925 silver issues in the series drew most collector attention, leaving the lower-fineness billon pieces comparatively overlooked despite identical subject matter.
