| 背面描述 | Right-facing draped bust portrait of Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States, rendered in low relief after a design by Alex Shagin. The portrait occupies the central field, with the subject shown in period civilian attire with a high collar. The legend MARTIN VAN BUREN curves along the upper periphery. In the lower right field, the presidential term dates 1837 and 1841 are stacked and flanked by dots, while the minting year 2000 appears in the lower exergual area below the bust. |

Liberia's late-1990s and early-2000s collector series flooded the market with copper-nickel issues bearing American presidential portraits, produced under license by foreign minting contractors rather than at any Liberian facility. Van Buren's inclusion follows simple chronological logic — he was the eighth president — but the series as a whole was driven by export revenue rather than domestic monetary need. Liberia's own currency had been in crisis since the mid-1980s, and coins of this type never circulated within the country.
