Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Palau within an ornate shield-shaped cartouche, featuring the figure of a sea god seated centrally holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid to his right and a treasure chest to his left, with a crescent moon and star above. A traditional outrigger canoe with a paddler is depicted above the shield. Eight five-pointed stars are arranged in an arc around the field. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU curves along the upper periphery, the denomination 5$ appears at the base, and the inscription RAINBOW'S END is inscribed within the lower portion of the shield.

Additional information

Palau has operated a prolific commemorative coin program since the 1990s, licensing its sovereign issuing authority to foreign minting houses — primarily the Bavarian State Mint and later the Mint of Poland — to produce collector pieces that rarely if ever circulate within the island nation itself. The Hand of Hamsa issue is part of that commercial tradition, sold entirely to overseas collector markets.

The hamsa as an amulet predates both Islam and Judaism, with roots in the ancient Near East traceable to Phoenician and Punic use of the protective hand symbol.
