Nauru has issued currency since gaining independence in 1968, but its collector coin program has long operated as a revenue mechanism rather than a reflection of national monetary history. This piece — a fractional gold issue with no meaningful connection to Napoleon or to Nauru — exists because the market for small-denomination pure gold coins with famous portrait licenses was commercially viable in 2011, not because either subject demanded commemoration.
