| Additional information |
Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, this coin carries particular weight for the Solomon Islands — the archipelago was among the most fiercely contested Pacific territories of the war, with the Guadalcanal campaign alone lasting six months and costing tens of thousands of lives on both sides. The islands were under Japanese occupation from 1942, and the naval battles fought in surrounding waters were decisive in halting Japanese expansion.
KM#54a is the silver variant of a base-metal issue struck in the same year.
